Keynote Session: Understanding by Design and the Student Brain
In this Keynote Address, Jay McTighe and Tracey Tokuhama-Espinosa pair up to examine how the Understanding by Design ® (UbD) framework connects to the fundamental elements of Mind, Brain, and Education science. Using the three stages of “backward design” in UbD, they will explore different types of educational goals (Stage 1), varied purposes and methods of assessment (Stage 2), and instructional practices (Stage 3) through the lens of neuro-constructivist design and different types of thinking by students. They will offer practical and proven ways that teachers can engage learners in active thinking and “meaning making” for deep learning that transfers.
