The promise of competency-based education (CBE) is a learning environment where every student is empowered to do cognitively complex work that matters to them. In this session, we’ll simulate from start to finish the design of a competency-based assessment. We’ll articulate competencies, draft rubrics, and imagine new learning experiences that integrate some of the essential components of CBE (portfolios, student voice and change, reassessment) and that deprioritize practices that hinder student-led learning (grades, rigid pacing, standardized assessment). Participants will be provided with structured prompts and activities that allow them to craft assessments relevant to their specific practices and context. In addition, we’ll explore “AI Pathways” that consider how artificial intelligence can play a supporting role in designing and facilitating these assessments.
